HVO100: the biofuel with which we save considerable CO₂ emissions on road transport. In addition to vegetable oils, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is also produced from waste, residual oils and fats, such as processed frying fat. In the Netherlands, our pipes are transported with Shell Renewable Diesel. This is an HVO100 product, or HVO in its purest form.
HVO100, the facts
Because plants have already absorbed CO₂ from the atmosphere, compensation takes place for what is emitted again through combustion in the diesel engine. Measured 'well-to-wheel', the reduction of CO₂ is no less than 89%. Ah, so not completely CO₂ neutral, you will say. But still: 89% is already a good score. The plants used are not grown specifically for this purpose, but are processed as residual material. An important characteristic is the higher combustion value (cetane) compared to synthetic diesel, ensuring better and cleaner combustion in the engine. This results in a significant reduction in nitrogen emissions (-9%), carbon monoxide (-24%), soot and particulate matter (-3%).
Investing in sustainable innovations
As a family business, Van Leeuwen bears a responsibility for the environment and society. We invest in the electrification of our assets, the generation of solar energy and in the launch of Van Leeuwen Impact, our brand for steel pipes made from CO₂ reduced steel.
In addition, we are constantly looking at how we can make the supply chain more sustainable. That is why we use HVO100 for our domestic transport, for the many trucks that bring our pipes to the customers in the Netherlands. All trucks of our transport partner LV Logistics run on HVO100. In this way, we not only contribute to a healthier environment, it also ensures that the carbon footprint of our customers is reduced.
To give an idea: in 2023, 167,000 liters of HVO100 were refueled. The savings in CO₂ emissions by using HVO100 for Van Leeuwen are between 379,000 and 397,000 kg CO₂ per year. This is equivalent to the emissions of an average car driving around the world 55 times!
